Why is it so important to wear retainers after completing orthodontic treatment?
Teeth are surrounded by periodontal ligaments and these ligaments are made of numerous fibers running in all different directions. Teeth erupt in the most natural and relaxed position, which is often times not straight. When patients have braces, teeth are pulled and rotated in different directions, causing strain on the fibers of these ligaments. Once braces are removed and if retainers are not worn, the teeth want to shift back so the ligaments are back in their most relaxed position. If you’ve lost your retainer, please inquire at your next dental visit; otherwise, please keep wearing your retainers after braces and other appliances are removed. Orthodontic treatment is a lifelong commitment and we want you to maintain your happy, healthy smile here at Gentry Smiles.

Where we don’t do much orthodontic treatment at Gentry Smiles, we want to support the work of our local orthodontists and as a dental team we want what is best for our patients! So, um, yes. You do have to wear your retainers. But, only if you want your teeth to stay straight.
